Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve got a stack of partially read business books, blog posts, and magazine articles growing by the day. Most of the time, I pick up a book or magazine at the airport, swearing I’ll read it eventually…but it just gets added to the growing pile on my nightstand.
And most of the ones I do read, it feels like I’m reading a fantasy novel – nothing but rainbows and unicorns! So I turn my attention back to the real-world problems and tough decisions facing founders and entrepreneurs like me every single day. Talk about whiplash!
When it comes to business writing and “thought leadership,” it seems like no one wants to shoot straight with us. The truth is that there is SO MUCH that can and will go wrong when you’re trying to found, build, and scale a company.
And as I’ve learned from my own experience and years of working with high-growth entrepreneurial companies, even the “fairy tale” companies have to fight and claw their way at times. There are always shit shows hidden behind the rainbow!
So why don’t we hear more examples of THOSE stories? Probably because admitting you were wrong, or could’ve done something better, or didn’t make a good decision – is hard. Once you’ve reached a certain level of success, it’s easy to forget those times when you almost didn’t make it. But I believe that’s the wrong way to look at business.
As an audience, we need to hear the true stories from the trenches, not the ten-thousand-foot view from the mountain top! I’m a firm believer that most of us learn far more in our failures than in our successes. Hearing about the bumps, bruises, and battle scars along the way is not only more interesting…it’s way more helpful!
